[9/11/2015] Activities Day Fair

I love the Activities Day Fair. It happens during the first week of the Fall semester, and all the different student clubs table out on College Walk. Basically, we bribe the new Freshmen with candy and chocolate, tell them about our club and upcoming events, and then ask them to sign up for our list serv. We meet hundreds of people and it’s a lot of fun. We also usually get a bit of a tan from standing out in the sun tabling at the Activities Day Fair! 🙂

Here’s a picture of Arianna, Carla and Andrea at our table:

[9/10/2015] Meet & Greet

Our first “General Body” meeting of the 2015-2016 year! We started planning for this meeting in Spring 2015 and sent out this marketing blurb (multiple times) via our list-serv and facebook page over the summer:

“Come and meet our board (and each other), learn about what we do, and how you can get involved. We’ll also give you the opportunity to ask a panel of current board members any questions you want about our “pre-law” journeys so far — what internships we’ve done so far, how to apply for law-related internships, what classes to take, how to get started on LSAT prep, etc.”

(That pre-planning and careful outreach was definitely how we managed to get such a huge turnout on the third day of school!)

In terms of format, we had a panel and Q&A with our board members, before breaking up into small group games and activities. It was a huge team effort and went really well!

[9/3/2015] September “Kick Off”! (List Serv Email)

More than one week before school started, we sent out the following email to our list-serv… As you can see, we had 4 events planned out (and one in the works) even before the semester began, so that the moment school started we didn’t have to waste any time planning and could simply just execute, execute, execute!

Dear Pre-Law,

It’s September and we have a ton of exciting events coming up for you!

To kick off the new semester, we’re hosting a Meet and Greet at 7.15pm on Thursday 9/10 where you can meet our Board, learn about what we do and how to get involved. Our Board will also be sharing tips about our pre-law journeys and how we got our “legal” internships so far. All new and current students are welcome and we’ll have free food!

More details about the Meet & Greet, and the rest of our upcoming events, are available below.

(We’ll also have another event not listed below, “How do I start preparing for law school?”, an Academic Affairs panel with advising and law school deans, as well as external consultants, coming up. Date and location TBA.)

We can’t wait to meet you in person at our upcoming events. Have a fantastic start to the Fall 2015 semester!

Kind regards,

Genevieve Antono

[2015-2016 Board] Recruitment

Recruitment!! One of my favorite times of the year. We sent out this list-serv email to the General Body in early April 2015:

Dear Pre-Law,

I joined the Columbia Pre-Law Society Executive Board two years ago, during my first semester at Columbia. It’s a (short) story that I very much enjoy recounting — I was having waffles and cake with a Senior I’d just met, Jaclyn Willner CC’14, when she said, “Hey, I’m with the Pre-Law Society and we’re having elections. You should apply.”

And so I applied.

Being a part of the Pre-Law Society over the last two years has been an incredible experience. I’ve learnt a tremendous amount about law schools and the legal profession, and I’ve had the privilege of working with a wonderful team of high-achieving, like-minded friends. It has been really, really fun to run event after successful event with them.

We’ve just completed our round of internal elections, and I am thrilled to say that I’ll be leading the Board again next year, together with Vice-Presidents Megan Kincaid CC’17 and Korey Petgrave SEAS’17, and Treasurer Ashley Lee GS’17. Together with our Graduating Seniors, we’ll now be commencing our external elections for all other posts.

Therefore, if you’re someone who is interested in law and willing to commit to making the Pre-Law Society your priority, as well as someone who works hard, works well with others and takes ownership of your responsibilities — we want you on our team.

“Hey, I’m with the Pre-Law Society and we’re having elections. You should apply.”

Kind regards,

[2/24/2015] Athena-Columbia Mentoring Program

2015 was the first year that the Columbia Pre-Law Society collaborated with the Athena Pre-Law Society (our counterparts at Barnard) to host a joint mentorship program pairing undergraduates with Columbia Law School students. There were 3 parts to this program: (1) a kick off dinner, (2) a speed networking event and (3) a tour of Columbia Law School. The photos below were from the kick-off dinner at Barnard, organized by the team at Athena:
