[2/24/2015] Athena-Columbia Mentoring Program

2015 was the first year that the Columbia Pre-Law Society collaborated with the Athena Pre-Law Society (our counterparts at Barnard) to host a joint mentorship program pairing undergraduates with Columbia Law School students. There were 3 parts to this program: (1) a kick off dinner, (2) a speed networking event and (3) a tour of Columbia Law School. His impressive bio includes a great range of work from Governance Policy Chief for the State Department at the U.S. Embassy in Kabul, Afghanistan to International Finance Lawyer at Cleary Gottlieb in New York. Lawpreneurship Panel with CORE and Pre-Law Society

Law and technology are two words that are rarely used together in a sentence. Recently however, tech companies have been attempting to disrupt the legal space at every level and from every angle. Columbia University’s CORE and Pre-Law Society present: Lawpreneurship, a panel about the implications of technology in the law industry presently as well as in the future. It will feature two lawyers, David Feldman and Daniel Gershburg, and two law entrepreneurs, Nikhil Nirmel, founder of Lawdingo and Jake Heller, cofounder & CEO of Casetext. There will be delicious FOOD and moderated Q&A.


David Feldman, Partner of Richardson & Patel in NYC
David’s law practice focuses on corporate and securities matters and general representation of public and private companies, investment banks, private equity firms and high net worth individuals. David’s latest book, The Entrepreneur’s Growth Startup Handbook: 7 Secrets to Venture Funding and Growth Success, was published in May 2013. David is also considered one of the country’s leading experts on alternatives to traditional initial public offerings, including reverse mergers, in which a private company becomes publicly traded through a merger with a publicly held “shell” company. David is a Wharton School graduate and had received his JD from the University of Pennsylvania Law School.

Daniel Gershburg, founder of Gershburg Law, P.C.
Born and raised in Brooklyn, NY, Daniel Gershburg always had an entrepreneurial spirit. After graduating New York Law School, Daniel founded his own law office, hoping to change the way small attorneys are perceived. Besides being the Owner and President, Daniel is involved in various not for profit and Pro Bono initiatives including the Brooklyn Bar Association Volunteer Lawyers Project, and PENCIL.org.

Nikhil Nirmel, founder of Lawdingo
Nikhil Nirmel is an NYC-based entrepreneur in the nascent virtual professional services space. Prior to starting Lawdingo, Nikhil led business intelligence at Yodle and Yelp, and is an alumnus of Y Combinator. In the winter of 2013, took Lawdingo through Y Combinator as a solo, non-technical founder, and raised a seed round of $850k. Nikhil studied Information Management and holds a BS in Economics from University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School.

Jake Heller, cofounder & CEO of Casetext
Jake Heller is a Silicon Valley native who wanted to put the idea of crowdsourcing in law into reality with Castext. As an alumnus of Y Combinator, Casetext has raised $1.8 million from investors, including David Tisch’s BoxGroup, Ashton Kutcher’s A-Grade Investments, former Thomson Reuters CEO Tom Glocer, and Quora cofounder Charlie Cheever. Jake holds a JD from Stanford LawSchool. Prior to cofounding Casetext, he served as a law clerk for Judge Michael Boudin at the U.S. Court of Appeals for the First Circuit in Boston, as well as an associate at Ropes & Gray LLP.
